Charles Ives (1874-1954) was born in Danbury, Connecticut, and throughout his life and career as a composer kept close to his
New England roots. In his music, Ives makes use of the melodies he heard in his youth – marching-band tunes, patriotic songs,
sentimental ballads and church hymns – manipulating them and filtering them through experiments in harmony and rhythm that have
no parallel for an American composer of his time, and anticipated later developments in the European avant-garde. His music was
seen as odd or unplayable by the musical establishment, and most of it was not published until many years after he wrote it,
when adventurous musicians began to bring the public’s attention to this American original.
